Statement on the Death of Sir Kenneth Bloomfield

1 June 2025

The joint UK and Irish Commissioners of the Independent Commission for the Location of Victims’ Remains (ICLVR), Rosalie Flanagan and Tim Dalton have said that they were ‘deeply saddened’ to learn of the death of Sir Kenneth Bloomfield who was the UK Commissioner from the ICLVR;’s inception in 1999 until his retirement in 2019.

The ICLVR was set up in 1999 by both the UK and Irish Governments as part of the outworking of the Good Friday/ Belfast Agreement to locate and recover the remains of those abducted, murdered and secretly buried during the Troubles: the Disappeared.

In a joint statement Rosalie Flanagan and Tim Dalton said:

“We were deeply saddened to learn of the death of Sir Ken.

He brought to the ICLVR not only his vast experience as a highly distinguished public servant but crucially an innate humanitarian instinct and empathy with the families of the Disappeared.

The work of the ICLVR in seeing the recovery of 13 of the 17 Disappeared is one of the success stories of the peace process and Sir Ken’s contribution to that as a founding Commissioner was huge.

We extend our condolences to Lady Bloomfield and the Bloomfield family”.

Ends.
