Search paused at Bragan Bog for Columba McVeigh
4 November 2022
The search at Bragan Bog Co Monaghan for the remains of Columba McVeigh who was abducted, murdered and secretly buried by the IRA in 1975 will be paused over the winter as persistent and torrential rain will make the bog too dangerous for contractors and archaeologists to continue to work on, the Independent Commission for the Location of Victims’ Remains (ICLVR) has announced today (Friday 4 November).
Jon Hill, the ICLVR’s senior investigator who is co-ordinating the search said:
"Working on bogland is a significant challenge at the best of times and so as anticipated we have now paused the search for the winter period to maximise our opportunities for discovery when weather and ground conditions have improved.
Any suspension of a search is deeply frustrating for the McVeigh family but they understand the reasons for it.
And they also know that we will be back with renewed determination to do everything in our power to bring this search to a successful conclusion and bring Columba home".
Ends.
